Hey Shorty, it’s MA birthday!

Here are my five biggest takeaways from my 34th year….

1. Cybersickness is a real thing

It basically felt like having motion sickness on land for 3 days.

What I learned was to use the 20-20-20-20 rule.

Every 20 minutes take a break from your computer.
Look away at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more.
Also, blink and squeeze the eyes 20 times.
It’s simple and it has really helped to ward off the symptoms I was experiencing after my 3-day bout!

2. Situational Awareness is Key

Understanding the moment can help to put things into context and make things feel less overwhelming.  It allows us to better manage where we place our attention which makes us feel more in control.

3. Isopropyl Alcohol is like dry shampoo for clothes.

It’s an old broadway trick I learned years ago and remembered last spring when COVID lockdown went into effect.  2/3 alcohol and 1/3 water and spray the armpits of your favorite sweater:) Or anything that needs a freshen up but you don’t want to send to the dry cleaner just yet.

4. Mindfulness = Amazingness

I’ve never appreciated this practice more than I have this past year.  Being able to observe the way I was feeling without judging, gave me space to decide how I wanted to react to each feeling as it arose.

5. Savor the Small Things

The first cup of morning coffee.
That feeling of the sun on your skin.
Chatting with those people who “GET YOU”

When we focus on the small things, they add up a lot faster than the big ones and it’s so much easier to stay in gratitude this way.  Gratitude takes what we have and makes it enough.

I love the process of reflection because it gives our brains an opportunity to pause and find meaning in the midst of the chaos.  I urge you to take a moment each day to do the same.
