When we feel like nothing makes sense, it’s our daily routines, rituals, and actions that help us find meaning—even in the most unsettling of times. A healthy daily routine is a commitment to yourself. If we want to fully show up for everyone else, we first have an obligation to show up for ourselves. 

In the long term, when we structure our lives with meaningful daily routines, we become examples and role models for those in our lives who look up to us. By taking care of ourselves, we are able to fully invest in the people around us and craft meaningful, fulfilling lives.

Benefits of a Healthy Daily Routine

Creating daily routines and rituals helps us grow in a number of important ways. 

First, a healthy daily routine will help you to focus your mind on the tasks at hand, helping you achieve your goals. Routines leave less to chance—you know exactly what you are going to do, and you know how to make yourself feel better, especially on days when you don’t feel your best. 

When you are focused on consistency, which you develop through a routine, you’re able to work toward your goals on a daily basis rather than only when you feel like it. 

When you implement a daily routine, you’ll experience less overthinking about the actions you take and the choices you make. This helps give you a sense of control over your life. By establishing routines, you not only take control over how you feel and what you do, but also get to experience satisfaction and feel accomplished whenever you complete your daily routine. 

Having a plan and following through feels good. And when we struggle with productivity or feeling like our lives matter, routines make a world of difference. 

Without a Daily Routine, Life Feels Much Harder

I have personal experience with how important a healthy daily routine is for feeling good and accomplishing goals. When my regular routine was upended when the pandemic hit, I struggled to fill my day. Because I had SO much down time, I would frequently start to overthink and lose sight of my goals. 

Fear and worry gripped me and came at a very specific time of the day (usually between 1 and 3pm). My mind would run rampant and it would trigger a physiological reaction in my body. My chest would get tight, and I would feel strung out and exhausted. When you spend a lot of time thinking, your body will start to react in accordance to your thoughts—for better or worse. 

In truth, I had not felt anxiety in that way since before I got into recovery. While incredibly unpleasant, it served as a reminder of what it truly feels like to have untamed anxiety and the torture it can inflict on our entire body. 

Luckily, I have tools. It took some digging into a bag I hadn’t accessed in a while. But I was able to remember those tools and how they support a productive mindset and the elimination of overthinking.

Routines Help You Find Energy

Negative thought patterns slow down your business, professional, and personal goals, and eventually lead to an energy drain. When you become stuck in a cycle of negativity, an energy drain forms, leaving you stressed.

When you’re experiencing an energy drain and feeling unmotivated, it’s important to refuel your passion and energy.  I am a huge advocate for self-care—and yes, self care is about so much more than just bubble baths. 

Self-care feeds us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Self care is something that you should weave into a healthy daily routine. 

Routines are not just for productivity or focus. Instead, an amazing daily routine should help you feel centered physically, mentally, and spiritually. By adding self care to your daily rituals, you’re able to create positive habits that help you develop a more positive, grounded mindset. 

Self Care Ideas for Your Healthy Daily Routine

We should all view self care through a multi-dimensional lens. Self care should energize us when we are feeling down, soothe and soften our edges when we are anxious, and also focus our attention and funnel it towards something productive. 

For example, schedule 20 minutes of reading around a topic that you are interested in. Apply it to the lens of your work (or the work you want to be doing). Even if it isn’t immediately relevant and useful today, it might be in a year from now.  

It can be overwhelming to have no ideas for self-care. But it can also be overwhelming to have too many options. Making decisions when you’re stressed out is challenging. Instead, focus on one simple self-care act that you can use to benefit you in a number of ways. 

Here are some easy ways to incorporate self care into your daily routine:

  • Create a habit of drinking enough water throughout the day, starting in the morning.
  • Practice gratitude by writing down five things you are grateful for each day.
  • Do something you really enjoy every morning to start the day off on a good note. 
  • Make your passions a priority and work on them each day. 
  • Eat a meal that fuels you and that you enjoy every single day.
  • Learn to say no when you have too much on your plate.
  • When things get stressful during the day, take a short walk or meditate.

Creating a healthy daily routine infused with self care strategies will help you find meaning, feel better, and consistently work toward accomplishing your goals. 

No matter what you are focused on, daily routines will help you get there! 

A good, nourishing daily routine is about so much more than what you physically do. It’s about creating a positive mindset through repeated, consistent actions.
